National telecommunications carrier TelstraClear’s corporate headquarters is a striking building, sitting in a high-profile location on the eastern edge of Smales Farm Technology Office Park at the busy intersection of Taharoto and Northcote Roads. It was designed to blend seamlessly into the local landscape. Opened in 1999, the TelstraClear Building remains one of New Zealand’s most technically advanced and environmentally sustainable buildings.

A distinctive landmark

The nearly 18,000sqm, five-storey TelstraClear Building is the largest building at Smales Farm Technology Office Park. It was designed by award-winning architects Warren and Mahoney to meet international best practice in terms of design, future-proofing and sustainability.

The glass building's footprint is shaped like a third of a doughnut, or a 120 degree ring.

In 2005, it was officially recognised by the Ministry for the Environment as one of the most architecturally significant and distinctive landmarks in the Auckland.

Micro-zoned heating and ventilation

In keeping with the Smales Farm building philosophy, the TelstraClear Building has a flexible, future-proofed design and makes use of the latest sustainable building technologies. For example, there is micro-zoned heating and ventilation along with natural light sensors that turn off the lights on bright days.

Outside normal business hours the toilets and floors are controlled by passive infrared sensors. There are high ceilings and glass windows to make the most of solar heating. TelstraClear estimates it reduced electricity demands by 30% when it moved to the building.

Raised floors throughout the building mean that the space can be quickly and simply reconfigured, moving power and data cables is simply a matter of lifting floor tiles.
